What does it take to own a Giant?

The Giant Schnauzer is a remarkable breed — loyal, intelligent, and striking in appearance. But before you fall in love with those bold looks and giant paws, it’s important to know if this breed is truly the right fit for your lifestyle.

Personality & Temperament

Giant Schnauzers are confident, spirited, and highly devoted to their families. They thrive when given a job to do... whether that’s training, working, competing, or simply being an active companion. They are naturally protective and make excellent guardians, but they need consistent training and socialisation to channel their strength and independence positively.

Exercise & Stimulation

This is a high-energy working breed. Daily exercise, mental challenges, and plenty of interaction are non-negotiable. Without structure and stimulation, a Giant Schnauzer can easily become bored, and a bored Giant is a handful! Agility, obedience, scent work, or long adventures outdoors are all perfect outlets.

Training & Commitment

With their intelligence and drive, Giants excel in training, but they also have a mind of their own. They respond best to confident, experienced handlers who use firm but fair, positive training methods. First-time dog owners may find the breed challenging, as consistency and dedication are key.

Family Life

Giant Schnauzers bond deeply with their people. They are affectionate and playful. Our Giants grow up surrounded in family life, and many go on to live in homes with small children and babies. With the right introductions, boundaries, and training, the love a Giant can give is absolutely unmatched.

Grooming Needs

Their dense, wiry coat requires regular grooming, including brushing, hand-stripping or clipping, and routine maintenance. This not only keeps them looking their best but also ensures their coat stays healthy.

The Bottom Line

A Giant Schnauzer can be an extraordinary companion for the right person: active, experienced, and ready to invest time in training, exercise, and care. In return, you’ll have a loyal, protective, and loving partner with a truly giant heart.
